Vehicle crash cuts power to parts of Eastgate shopping area

A vehicle crash on Linwood Avenue has cut power to parts of Eastgate’s shopping area.

The vehicle crashed into a power box outside KFC at about 9.30AM.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said two people have been taken to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance, one is in serious condition and another in a moderate condition.

The road, east bound, has been blocked while emergency services respond. 

Power at KFC, Taco Bell, The Warehouse has been cut.

Electricity remains on inside Eastgate Mall and Countdown.

The accident scene has been cordoned off by emergency services.


The power box was still smoking an hour after the crash and Orion Energy crews are on site.

The exit to Eastgate Mall off Linwood Ave has been blocked off, but the entrance remains option.


At least 200 power customers are without electricity.

Streets affected include Buckleys Road, Butterfield Avenue, Chelsea Street, Cranley Street, Linwood Avenue, Pamela Street, Pauline Street, Russell Lilley Drive, Russell Street.
