Community leaders in Christchurch’s eastern suburbs have expressed their condolences following the death of a man who was stabbed multiple times while walking his dog in Bexley.
The man died in hospital yesterday, eight days after he was attacked.
An 18-year-old man has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, while a 23-year-old woman has been charged as an accessory.
Detective Inspector Nicola Reeves said these charges are now being reviewed.
Coastal Ward City Councillor Celeste Donovan expressed her deepest sympathies to the victim’s family and friends.
“This is a shock to all those people in his community and to those of us living on this side of town.
The feedback I have been getting is shock and sadness for what has happened, and while I would encourage people to be mindful of their surroundings and report suspicious activity, is not a reflection of the community being under threat of this sort of incident.”
Donovan said “every morning people in our local neighbourhood walk their dogs before the sun comes up on the beach or local parks and this area is known for its strong sense of community with people looking out for each other.
I want to acknowledge the community who have come together to assist the police and to support each other in the aftermath of this tragedy.”
Donovan said having spoken to our local community constable recently and from conversations with residents, there are wider concerns about safety in our central city and our communities. So I have been working with the Christchurch City Council, police and relevant agencies on several initiatives to ensure our local residents and businesses have the support they need to feel safe.”
Christchurch East MP Poto Williams said “I would like to share my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the victim at this devastating time.
I also acknowledge those in the community who have come forward to assist police with their investigation thus far.”
