A man has died in a collision between a tractor and a train in Orari, between Geraldine and Temuka, last night.

It happened at the railway crossing on Hawke Road around 10:10pm.

According to the police spokesperson, the driver of the tractor received medical attention at the scene but unfortunately was not able to be revived.

The train driver was uninjured.

Hawke Road was closed for a time while the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene.

Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
