Fire and Emergency Canterbury crews are responding to multiple events across the region due to the strong winds.

A spokesperson said 7 fire appliances are attending a large fire in Glentui, Oxford.

“We also have 8 fire appliances at a large and fast-moving scrub fire in Masons Flat, Hurunui. Both of these fires are being hammered by strong winds and crews are working fast to try and contain these fires.”

Fire crews attended multiple fires in the Sheffield area early this morning.

“A fire is still actively burning in the Malvern Hills area and can be seen easily. This fire is under control and is being monitored by the landowner.”

SH73/West Coast Road near Racecourse Hill is blocked due to trees across the road. Contractors have been called to clear the roadway.

Many areas throughout North Canterbury are still experiencing severe winds.

POWER CUTS

At least 5000 customers are without power throughout Waimakariri and Hurunui regions due to severe winds.

Main Power says teams are assessing the situation and prioritising jobs.

“We will restore power as soon as it is safe to do so. State Highway 7 is closed restricting access to this area.”

Main Power says please treat all lines as live during the outage period; power may be restored at any time.

Due to trees falling because of high winds across Canterbury, SH7 Hanmer Springs turnoff to Springs Junction has been closed.

The Hurunui District Council says the roading team is keeping a close eye on the situation around the district.
