Emergency services are at the scene of a shooting on Hereford Street in central Christchurch.

The incident was initially reported to police just after 11.15am.

Police said one person has been injured and transported to hospital for treatment.

Police cordons are in place in the vicinity of Hereford Street and Stanmore Road while police work to establish what has occurred.

Armed police were patrolling cordons.

It’s understood the injured person was found near the Linwood community arts centre.

A local resident said police told her someone had been shot.
