A Police command unit and tent have been set up outside the house in Shirley where a serious assault took place.

A police spokesperson said they responded to an address on Olivine Street at 12.15am, following reports of an altercation between people known to each other.

Neighbours reported hearing yelling before emergency services arrived at the scene.

One man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Enquiries are under way to establish exactly what took place.
