The owner of a popular Christchurch dairy is recovering at home after being robbed by teenagers.

Police were called to the Redcliffs Convenience Store on Main Road just after 2pm on Monday.

An eyewitness said she saw two separate cars pull up outside the shop.

“One guy from each vehicle got out. They ran into the dairy, which I thought was super strange, as they were running pretty fast.”

The dairy owner told Chris Lynch two teenagers, wearing hoodies and masks started stuffing their backpacks with bags of sweets, ice cream, and chocolate.

“I tried to stop one of the getaway cars, by jumping onto the bonnet, but it drove away, and I fell to the ground” the dairy owner said.

An eyewitness said as the car was escaping the scene it crashed into the other getaway car, which clipped a passing bus.

The dairy owner suffered a cracked collar bone and cracked ribs.

“I’ve owned this dairy for 26 years, and nothing like this has ever happened before. This is the first time I’m dealing with this.”

The law in the country is just too soft” the man said.

The owner was resting at home in bed, taking painkillers.

“You try to live your life you know and this is what happens now.”

The owner said he’s been overwhelmed by well-wishers and regular customers who’ve called him.

He said the offenders were teenagers given what they stole and were “probably 13 or 14 years old.”

A St John ambulance spokeswoman said one rapid response unit, one manager, and one ambulance responded to the scene and treated then transported the patient to a central Christchurch medical facility.

Police said they were following lines of inquiry.
