Power cut to houses across Canterbury, thundery showers forecast for Christchurch

Northwest gales across Canterbury are set to ease this morning.

More than a thousand properties remain without power across the region as of 5AM.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman said crews were called to several jobs overnight relating to the reignition of fires from burn-offs.

Although it was quieter than Friday’ storm.

Nearly 400 houses in Coalgate, Glentunnel, Hororata are Whitecliffs are without power.

Orion said it expected power outages due to last night’s wind storm.

“Our crews will be out as soon as it is safe for them to restore power in the morning.”

Alpine Energy said power has been cut to properties in Arundel, Four Peaks, Peel Forest.

Metservice is forecasting morning rain in Christchurch, then showers from afternoon, possibly thundery and with snow to 600m by evening.

Severe gale northwest, gusts of 140 km/h possible about Banks Peninsula, easing morning.
