Police remain at the scene of what’s being described as an unexplained death.

Emergency services were called to Matipo Street, near Elizabeth Street in Riccarton just before 4AM.

Police say the death is “unexplained.”

“Enquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the incident.”

At 8.30AM, specialist forensic police staff and detectives arrived at the scene.

Blood can be seen on the gutter on Matipo Street.

A police command unit has been set up on the street.

Cordons are in place from Elizabeth Street to Rex Street. Medical equipment is still on Matipo Street.

Neighbours near the scene said they didn’t hear anything suspicious.

Wharenui School was cordoned off early this morning, but police have moved emergency tape and the school is open.
