Police were still at came an hour after incident

A witness to yesterday’s dog incident in Woolston is hoping the dog won’t be put down.

Emergency services were called to a property on Ferry Road at 9:45am after reports of an “incident involving a dog.”

Police said three people were involved, and one person was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

Christchurch City Council animal control officers were called to the scene.

Police officers were still at the scene an hour after they were first called.

A witness told chrislynchmedia.com that they saw the altercation unfold.

“I drove past the house and initially thought two people were kicking a dog,” the witness said. “When I looked closer, I realised it was a man kicking another man on the ground, with a woman also involved.

“There was kicking and punching, and the dog’s instincts kicked in—it literally got in the middle of the altercation.

“The dog was hit with a plank to try and stop it from biting.”

Person treated at the scene

The witness explained that the dog belonged to the woman, whose partner was fighting with another man.

“The woman was screaming. The man went back inside, and they eventually threw the dog into a car.”

The witness said the altercation was not caused by a dog attack and hoped authorities would take this perspective into account.
