After a hugely successful tour of the South Island, Unsung Heroes is making its return to Christchurch this October for four exclusive shows at Ferrymead Heritage Park.

Described as “New Zealand’s most entertaining history lesson,” Unsung Heroes promises an engaging mix of songs, slides, and stories from the country’s colonial past, accompanied by beautifully evocative music.

The show brings together five renowned actors, performers, and musicians in a captivating exploration of New Zealand’s colourful history.

The audience can expect tales of infamous rogues, a few folk heroes, and a sprinkling of rebels, all packaged into an evening of musical delight.

Former Christchurch-based actor Peter Elliott, known for his work in TV, stage, and film, serves as the narrator and compere for the show.

Joining him are Cameron Bennett (vocals/Dobro guitar), Chris Priestley (vocals/guitar), Sonia Wilson (vocals), and Nigel Gavin (7-string guitar).

Elliott said the cast has thoroughly enjoyed bringing these stories to life, many of which remain relatively unknown. “Take Jennie Anderson, for example. In the late 1800s, she became Aotearoa’s first magician—not just the first female magician, but the first magician. It’s a fascinating story, from her career starting at 17 to her tragic death at just 20,” he said.

Other highlights include the tale of parachutist David Mahoney (Captain Lorraine), who vanished after floating away from an 1889 exhibition at Lancaster Park, and inventor and aviator Richard Pearse, who died in Sunnyside mental asylum.

Priestley recalled a special connection made during the last Unsung Heroes tour. “We performed in Geraldine and were invited back to the Pearse family home in Waitohi for scones and tea by his great nephew. It was a wonderful connection,” he said.

Tickets for Unsung Heroes are available online at Eventfinda.

The show will take place at Ferrymead Lodge, within Ferrymead Heritage Park, from Friday, 18 October. Showtimes are 18 October at 7pm, 19 October at 2pm and 7pm, and 20 October at 1pm.
