Two people have died in a crash in Clarkville, south of Kaiapoi, overnight.

A police spokesperson said emergency services were called to the single-vehicle crash on Butchers Road at around 12:10am, where two people were found deceased.

The vehicle had collided with a power pole.

A St John spokeswoman said they responded with two ambulances, a rapid response unit, and a manager. Crews assessed and treated one patient, who was transported to Christchurch Hospital in moderate condition.

Butchers Road is expected to remain closed between Moodys Road and Christmas Road for much of the day as repairs to the power pole are carried out, the police spokesperson said.
