Former Selwyn Mayor Michael McEvedy, the district’s longest-serving mayor, has passed away. He held the role from 1995 to 2007.

A close friend told chrislynchmedia.com, “Michael passed away peacefully yesterday morning after a very brief illness. I saw him last Thursday, and he was fine, so it was rather sudden. His family were with him at the end. He will be greatly missed for his generosity and commitment to the Canterbury community, especially through his work with the Canterbury Museum and St John, where he served many years on their boards.”

As the former Chair of the Canterbury Museum Trust Board, McEvedy played a pivotal role in acquiring the Ivan Mauger Collection, ensuring the famed speedway rider’s memorabilia remained in Christchurch.

Canterbury Museum Director Anthony Wright said “The board and staff of the Museum were saddened to hear of Michael McEvedy’s death.

“He was a long-time loyal supporter, Board member, Deputy Chair and Chair of the Museum, and was instrumental in building strong and effective working relationships with Selwyn and the other district councils which contribute to the funding of the Museum.

He was always upbeat and positive, and incredibly caring and appreciative of the work carried out by staff. We will miss him greatly. Moe mai, moe mai moe mai.”

During his tenure as mayor  McEvedy oversaw the opening of Selwyn District Council’s new headquarters in Rolleston in 2007, centralising council operations to support the district’s rapid growth.

In recognition of his service, McEvedy was awarded the Companion of the Queen’s Service Order in 2007.

After stepping down as mayor, he continued his community contributions as Chair of the Selwyn Arts Trust and Commissioner for the Red Cross New Zealand Earthquake Commission.

Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg said, “I’m very saddened to hear of Michael’s passing. He was a true gentleman and someone I came to rely on for support and guidance. His wisdom will be sorely missed, and my thoughts are very much with his family at this time.”

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said “it is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Michael McEvedy, former mayor of Selwyn from 1995 to 2007. He was a dedicated public servant who left an indelible mark on our district.

“Michael’s leadership and vision played a pivotal role in shaping Selwyn into the thriving and prosperous community we know today. His efforts to centre our districts council in Rolleston and begin the industrial hub laid the groundwork for much of the success and growth we now enjoy, and his commitment to the people of Selwyn continued well outside of his Mayoral role.

“On a personal note, Michael was always encouraging of me and he regularly kept in touch as he continued to follow local government affairs.

On behalf of the Selwyn District Council and our community, I extend my deepest condolences to Michael’s family and close friends during this time. Our thoughts are with you as you mourn.”
