Last night’s New Zealand premiere of Come From Away by Showbiz Christchurch at the Isaac Theatre Royal was nothing short of outstanding. I’ll admit, I was sceptical about how this remarkable true story could be adapted for the stage — but the production quickly proved just how powerful and moving theatre can be when done right.

Set in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks, Come From Away tells the true story of 7,000 stranded airline passengers diverted to the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, after US airspace was shut down.

The musical captures the kindness of a community that opened its doors, and hearts, to total strangers in a time of global crisis.

The cast was exceptional. Every performer gave a strong, committed performance, switching between multiple characters with skill and clarity.

Jane Godfrey, in the role of the vibrant and endearing Diane, was a standout — full of fun, warmth, and impeccable timing.

The circular revolving stage added a clever and effective dynamic to the show, keeping the energy flowing and scenes transitioning smoothly.

It gave the production a sense of constant movement, echoing the emotional dislocation of the characters.

The onstage Come From Away band — a talented nine-piece ensemble — brought another level of vibrancy to the performance.

Their live presence elevated the storytelling and gave the entire production a rich, immersive sound.

Special credit goes to Harold Moot for the thoughtful set design and Grant Robertson for the lighting, both of which helped bring the world of Gander to life with simplicity and impact.

And in a touching moment after the curtain call, former Gander mayor Claude Elliott stepped onto the stage.

He said the production was professional — and he wasn’t wrong. It was a polished show that captured both the gravity and the humanity of the story, along with the sometimes nuttiness of any unexpected human experience.

Come From Away is a triumph for Showbiz Christchurch, surprisingly funny in parts, and a celebration of generosity in the face of tragedy.
