Youths at a Rolleston youth justice facility have surrendered after allegedly trying to escape.

A group of youths was involved in an incident at Te Puna Wai o Tuhinapo, an Oranga Tamariki facility , which started at about 9.20PM.

Two youths managed to get on top of the roof of the facility and could be heard shouting.

Fire and Emergency was notified at 9.20PM.

A spokeswoman confirmed an appliance was sent to the facility to assist police.

At least eight police units were stationed outside the facility, including a police dog handler.

A firefighter carrying a ladder was seen leaving the facility just after midnight.

It’s understood as soon as emergency crews accessed the roof, the youths surrendered without incident.

Chris Lynch Media understands the facility was placed into “lockdown” during the incident.

Oranga Tamariki has been approached for comment.
