A surge in canine parvovirus cases has been reported in Christchurch, with Linwood, Aranui, and Wainoni among the worst-hit areas.

The highly contagious and often fatal virus primarily affects unvaccinated dogs and puppies, attacking rapidly dividing cells in the intestines and bone marrow. This leads to severe vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, and life-threatening dehydration.

An SPCA spokesperson said the outbreak was concerning, urging dog owners to ensure their pets are fully vaccinated.

“Parvovirus is a devastating disease that spreads easily and can survive in the environment for up to a year. The best way to protect your dog is through vaccination,” they said.

The virus spreads through an infected dog’s faeces and vomit, either through direct contact or contaminated surfaces like bedding, food bowls, and even human clothing. The incubation period is typically 7–10 days, meaning infected dogs can shed the virus before showing symptoms.

Dogs showing signs of parvovirus, including lethargy, vomiting, and bloody diarrhoea, require immediate veterinary care. Treatment is intensive and expensive, with many dogs not surviving despite medical intervention.

The SPCA is reminding owners that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent the disease. Puppies require a series of initial vaccinations followed by regular boosters to remain protected.

Last week chrislynchmedia.com reported that Avonside Wainoni Vet Clinic had treated cases of the highly contagious and life-threatening virus, affecting not only puppies but also older dogs.

“To everyone’s horror, we are again dealing with a new surge of canine parvovirus in Christchurch, and our area is also affected,” the clinic said in an online post.

More information on vaccinating dogs against parvovirus can be found on the SPCA website: www.spca.nz.
