Sumner’s new skate park and village green have officially opened, offering a new hub for recreation and community gatherings in the heart of the seaside suburb.
The skate park boasts a 1.9m deep pool bowl with an upper 1.2m section, a 1–1.2m flow bowl featuring a corner extension, and a turnabout quarter pipe.
Skaters can also enjoy an ‘across and down’ ledge, a ramp leading to the pump bump area and manual box, a high pump bump, a rail, a rollover finger and learner section, as well as back and angled ledges.
Adjacent to the skate park, the community green space features picnic tables, sun umbrellas, barbeques, and a performance area surrounded by lush native plantings, creating a versatile space for relaxation and events.
Sumner Green and Skate Chair Charlie Hudson said the new development is a valuable asset for Sumner, the Bays Area, and Christchurch as a whole.
“This is a testimony to the collaboration of a dedicated community, central and local government, Christchurch City Council, and our local Community Board,” Hudson said. “Thousands of hours of work behind the scenes will now translate into thousands of hours of skating fun and communal activities on the village green.”
Christchurch City Council Community Parks Manager Al Hardy said the skate park has been a long-awaited project, reflecting the dedication of the Sumner community.
“This has been a labour of love for the community and a project that’s been hugely anticipated,” Hardy said. “We’re thrilled to deliver this recreational area and ‘hang out’ spot right in the heart of Sumner, just in time to enjoy over the Christmas period and summer months.”
Timber seating and decking surround the park, with a pathway seamlessly connecting the skate park to the village green, ensuring easy access and flow between the two spaces. With its thoughtful design and central location, the new facility is set to become a favourite destination for locals and visitors alike.
