Speed bumps will be installed at the intersection of Cranford Street and McFaddens Road, with working beginning next week.
Christchurch City Council staff said the upgrades address concerns about drivers failing to notice red signals at the pedestrian crossing while turning left out of McFaddens Road and looking for gaps in traffic.
The Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central Community Board approved the installation of measures, including a safe speed platform near the pedestrian crossing.
These measures are designed to slow traffic and give drivers more time to see red signals and stop, reducing the risk of accidents.
Council staff considered several other options, including fully signalising the intersection, but said the approved safety measures were the most cost-effective and efficient solution while maintaining traffic flow through the busy area.
The work has been scheduled during the school holidays to minimise disruption, with a 24/7 road closure in place on McFaddens Road at the intersection with Cranford Street from Monday, 20 January, to Tuesday, 28 January.
A lane drop will also be in place on Cranford Street at the pedestrian crossing.
On Thursday, 23 January, and Sunday, 26 January, northbound traffic on Cranford Street (towards the Christchurch Northern Corridor) will be closed between Innes Road and the Cranford Street roundabout from 11pm to 6am. Detours will be clearly marked.
Businesses in the area will remain open, with pedestrian access maintained, although on-street parking near the work site will be temporarily unavailable.
The council said the upgrades will improve safety for the community, particularly for people heading to schools, preschools, and local shops.
