One of New Zealand’s most iconic trail running events reaches a major milestone this weekend, as the Arc’teryx Routeburn Classic returns for its 20th edition with a record-breaking sell-out.

All 400 entries for the 2025 race were snapped up on the day registrations opened—the fastest sell-out in the event’s two-decade history. The race takes place this Saturday on the renowned Routeburn Track, which winds through the heart of Fiordland and Mount Aspiring National Parks in the South Island.

Athletes will tackle a 32-kilometre course that showcases some of New Zealand’s most spectacular scenery, including alpine meadows, ancient beech forests, and rugged mountain passes. The route reaches a peak elevation of 1,255 metres at Harris Saddle, with runners traversing the Te Wāhipounamu – South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.

Race Director Glen Currie said the 20th anniversary marks a significant moment for the event.

“This race means a lot to so many people, and to see it continue to grow year after year is incredibly rewarding,” Currie said. “The fact we completely sold out on the first day is a testament to the strength of our trail running community and the magic of the Routeburn Track itself.”

This year’s field includes both domestic and international competitors, with Polish ultra-runner Piotr Babis tipped as the front-runner in the men’s race. Babis recently won the 46km Kunanyi Alpine Marathon in Tasmania.

In the women’s category, Julia Chamberlain is the one to watch. Chamberlain holds course records at the Naseby 100km and Wai2K 100km races and placed in the top 10 at the highly competitive Tarawera 100km in February.
