Access Lock Specialists Christchurch is encouraging homeowners to consider upgrading to smart lock technology, offering a new level of convenience, control, and security for residential properties.

Smart locks are becoming increasingly popular across the country, and for good reason. These modern systems allow users to unlock their doors using a smartphone, keypad, fingerprint scanner, or even voice control — eliminating the need for traditional keys.

Access Lock Specialists co-director Roger Barriball said the technology offers flexibility and peace of mind.

“Smart locks give homeowners full control over their doors, no matter where they are. Whether you’re at work, on holiday, or just out running errands, you can lock and unlock your doors remotely using a mobile app.”

The locks support a variety of access methods including PIN codes, biometric authentication, key fobs, and backup physical keys, ensuring homeowners are never locked out.

For families, Airbnb hosts, and busy households, the guest access feature is a major advantage. Temporary or scheduled access codes can be created for visitors, housekeepers, or delivery drivers — all without needing to hand over a physical key.

“These systems also integrate with major smart home platforms like Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit, making them easy to include in your existing home automation setup,” the spokesperson said.

Smart locks often include auto-locking capabilities, tamper alerts, and activity logs — allowing users to monitor who enters and exits their homes and receive real-time notifications of any suspicious activity.

“They’re battery-powered, designed for New Zealand conditions, and can be installed by a homeowner or one of our professional technicians,” the spokesperson added.

Access Lock Specialists was established in 2007 by Roger Barriball and Richard Nind, building on the foundations of Access Locksmiths, which has operated as a mobile service in Canterbury for more than 35 years. Roger and Richard bring extensive experience in the locksmith industry and offer a complete service covering residential, commercial, automotive, and safes, with a strong focus on customer satisfaction.

Operating from a modern workshop and showroom at 170 Waterloo Road, Hornby, the business runs three fully equipped service vehicles across Christchurch and Canterbury. With excellent off-street parking, their facilities are capable of handling a wide range of jobs — from duplicating standard keys and cutting high-security vehicle keys, to servicing locks and safes, programming automotive transponder keys, and creating restricted master key systems.
