Six youths are facing 60 charges following a series of vehicle break-ins that have impacted Rangiora and the surrounding Waimakariri area.

North Canterbury Police apprehend the offenders after an increase in vehicle thefts from April through May.

Their investigations culminated in the execution of three search warrants within the North Canterbury area, leading to the identification of a group of youths involved.

During one of the searches, conducted between June and July, police recovered 22 stolen ignition barrels at a single address.

The six youths have been charged and are set to appear before the Christchurch Youth Court.

Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel said “The impact of these crimes goes beyond the physical loss of property. They are eroding the sense of safety that our residents deserve. We will continue to work diligently to identify and apprehend those responsible and hold them to account.”

In response to the rising number of vehicle thefts, police are urging vehicle owners to take extra precautions.

Recommendations include locking doors, removing valuables from sight, and parking in well-lit areas. Additionally, the police are encouraging the community to report any suspicious behaviour immediately, enabling timely investigations.
