Several Christchurch areas is set to undergo series of transport projects aimed at enhancing road safety and pedestrian convenience.
Local Community Boards have greenlit a plan that targets some of the most accident-prone intersections and key routes in the city.
In Shirley, two intersections notorious for their high crash rates will see major upgrades.
The Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central Community Board has approved modifications for the Shirley Road, Warrington Street, and Hills Road intersection.
Additionally, in collaboration with the Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board, it has sanctioned improvements for the intersection at Shirley Road, New Brighton Road, Marshland Road, and North Parade.
Enhancements will include the installation of safe speed platforms and raised pedestrian crossings, aimed at reducing accidents and ensuring safer passage for pedestrians.
Further efforts to bolster road safety extend to New Brighton, where the Travis Road, Bower Avenue, and Rookwood Avenue roundabout will undergo significant changes.
The introduction of speed humps, bike markings, and larger pedestrian refuges come as a response to local residents’ calls for improved safety measures.
The South New Brighton entrance will also receive a facelift with the upgrade of the Bridge Street and Estuary Road roundabout.
Plans include new speed humps, no stopping lines, and pedestrian warning signs to mitigate risks associated with high speeds and poor visibility.
