A significant police presence has descended on the Christchurch suburb of Spreydon.

St John spokesperson told Chris Lynch Media they attended an incident at 2:30 pm but referred further media enquiries to the police.

The incident occurred on Barrington Street, where police cars are stationed on both sides of the road.

A handful of detectives arrived at the scene this afternoon, with more visiting the property just before 5 pm.

A police spokesperson said they would provide comments on the situation as soon as possible.
