MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for areas near the Four Peaks Range.
MetService radar detected severe thunderstorms near the Four Peaks Range, moving east-southeast.
These storms are forecast to impact areas near Mount Peel and the Four Peaks Range.
According to MetService, the thunderstorms are expected to bring torrential rain and large hail.
•Torrential Rain: Risk of surface and flash flooding in streams, gullies, and urban areas, creating hazardous driving conditions.
•Large Hail: Potential to cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses, and vehicles, as well as making roads unsafe.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in place for the Canterbury Plains, Canterbury High Country, North Otago, and Central Otago.
The National Emergency Management Agency advises residents in affected areas to take the following precautions:
Before the storm:
•Seek shelter indoors, away from windows.
•Avoid sheltering under trees if outside.
•If on the water, return to land immediately.
•Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
•Secure loose objects around your property.
•Clear drains and gutters to reduce the risk of flooding.
During and after the storm:
•Be cautious of fallen trees and power lines.
•Avoid streams, rivers, and drains, as flash flooding could sweep you away.
Drivers are urged to be prepared for hazardous conditions, including reduced visibility and slippery roads.
