The University of Canterbury has responded to reports of illness among students residing at University Hall and Ilam Student Accommodation, where several students became unwell overnight.
Executive Director People, Culture and Campus Life, Paul O’Flaherty, said the university was concerned about the situation and was actively working with the National Public Health Service to identify the cause.
“This is, of course, concerning to us, and we are working closely with the National Public Health Service to investigate the cause of the illness,” O’Flaherty said.
He added that Public Health staff visited University Hall earlier today to conduct tests on a small sample of students to help determine the source of the illness.
While the affected students appear to be recovering, the university has recommended that they stay hydrated, practise careful handwashing, and refer to the Health New Zealand website for additional advice.
As an added measure of support, students have been directed to UniLodge, where they can access bottled water, a free electrolyte mix to address dehydration, and packaged meals.
O’Flaherty said that although medical treatment does not appear to be necessary for most students, those needing further assistance could contact UniLodge through its 24/7 hotline (0508 864 425) or reach out to Healthline (0800 611 116) for advice at any time.
Students unable to attend exams due to illness have been encouraged to apply for special consideration.
The university said they may be offered the opportunity to resit their exams in the coming weeks, allowing them additional time to recover.
The investigation is ongoing as the university seeks to understand the source of the illness and prevent further cases.
