Emergency services are responding to a serious crash on Main South Road in Selwyn.
It was reported to police around 5:40pm.
A spokeswoman said the crash involves two vehicles.
Injuries had not been confirmed at this stage.
The crash is near Selwyn Lake Road on a train crossing but no trains were involved.
Traffic management is being put in place at the scene.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and avoid the area.
A KiwiRail spokesman said “we understand a trailer of some kind has rolled at a level crossing.
“No trains are involved.
There is one freight train scheduled to go through the area, which is delayed until the track is cleared.”
