Melbourne teenager Holly Bowles, 19, has died in a Bangkok hospital following a suspected methanol poisoning incident in Laos.
Her death occurred just a day after her close friend, Bianca Jones, succumbed to the same poisoning.
The two friends were on a backpacking trip through Southeast Asia when they consumed methanol-laced cocktails in Vang Vieng, Laos.
This incident has resulted in multiple fatalities, including tourists from the UK, Denmark, and the US, and several hospitalisations.
Authorities in Laos have detained several individuals in connection with the case, including the manager and owner of the Nana Backpacker Hostel.
The U.S. State Department issued health alerts for travellers to Laos, warning about methanol-laced alcoholic beverages.
Methanol, often used as a cheaper substitute for ethanol in drinks, can cause severe poisoning or death if consumed.
The incident has caused significant concern among tourists and local business owners, as Vang Vieng is a popular destination for backpackers.
