Multiple Fire and Emergency crews are responding to a scrub fire near Hanmer Springs this afternoon.
The fire broke out near State Highway 7A, the main route into Hanmer Springs, just before 2pm.
Six fire appliances are currently on the scene, along with two tankers, and two helicopters.
The blaze was about 500 metres in length and a hundred metres wide.
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said smoke from the fire was drifting across the highway, prompting the closure of the road due to safety concerns.
The road will remain closed until the situation no longer poses a hazard to traffic.
Although the fire was initially contained, additional fire crews were called in at 3:20pm to provide further support.
The public has been urged to stay clear of the area to allow emergency teams to fully extinguish the blaze and ensure safety.
