The Christchurch City Council’s ongoing efforts to enforce new road modeling on Glandovey and Idris Roads may face a backlash.

A scheme design for these roads was developed to address safety and accessibility concerns raised by a local resident group. The design aims to reallocate road space for two cycle lanes (one on each side of both Glandovey and Idris Roads) and add five pedestrian refuge islands (two on Idris Road, three on Glandovey Road).

These changes would result in the removal of 116 parking spaces on Glandovey Road and 62 parking spaces on Idris Road, leaving only 34 spaces on Glandovey Road and 42 on Idris Road.

Community feedback during the consultation process highlighted opposition to the loss of parking. Despite this, transport staff have recommended that the community board choose the least popular option.

The council’s report acknowledged, “There is a risk the local community will perceive the Council has ignored the community’s concerns around the removal of parking spaces.”

Regarding the removal of on-street parking, only 10% of feedback was positive, with just four respondents living on Glandovey or Idris Roads. In contrast, 40% of feedback was negative, with 34 residents from these roads expressing dissatisfaction.

The council’s decision to push forward with the unpopular option has sparked concerns among residents, who contacted chrislynchmedia, expressing that they feel their voices and concerns are being ignored.

Councillor James Gough said, “It’s always imperative that the community’s voices are heard and respected throughout any decision-making process.

“While I acknowledge the need for safer neighborhood streets, it is crucial that we balance these improvements with the everyday needs of our residents, including maintaining adequate parking and preserving the character of streets.

“Glandovey and Idris Roads are more than just transit routes; they are integral parts of our community’s fabric, contributing significantly to the amenity value we all enjoy. It is vital that any changes keep this in mind while meeting the needs of residents.”
