A fan heater under a nationwide recall has caused fire damage to an accommodation property in Lake Tekapo.

A spokesperson for the Lake Tekapo Volunteer Fire Brigade said they responded to the incident at 8:30 PM on Wednesday.

“The fan heater caused significant damage to a bathroom.

“Thanks to the quick actions of a passerby, the damage was contained to the bathroom and an outside wall.”

The recalled heaters, Serene wall-mounted bathroom models S2068, S207T, and S2069, have been flagged by WorkSafe as non-compliant with New Zealand safety standards.

Sale, installation, and import of these units have been prohibited due to the risk of overheating and fire.

People are urged to check the make and model of any wall-mounted bathroom heaters they own. For the S2068 model, immediate disconnection and removal by an electrician is advised.
