Police have expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the local community and people across New Zealand following the death of Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming.
Police Commissioner Richard Chambers said the response had been deeply moving.
“This morning, with a number of Police staff present, iwi from across Te Tau Ihu blessed the scene of yesterday’s tragic events,” he said.
“I would like to thank iwi for their support, along with members of the community who have delivered flowers, cards, and the thousands of messages we have received. These have meant a lot to our staff in Nelson as well as to the wider Police family.”
Chambers said the coming weeks and months would be challenging for the Nelson station as staff come to terms with the tragedy. He assured the community that Police were prioritising support for those directly affected.
Police have also received condolences from law enforcement agencies across Australia, the Pacific, and Canada.
In addition, Chambers confirmed that Senior Sergeant Adam Ramsay, who was injured in the same incident, is now in a stable condition and beginning his recovery.
“Police will be with him every step of the way,” Chambers said.
Two members of the public who were injured in the incident are also recovering and receiving support.
“We are doing everything we can for Lyn’s family, but this is an incredibly difficult time for them as they come to terms with what has happened,” he said.
Police expect to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
