Christchurch has ramped up its policing efforts with the launch of the new Community Beat Teams this month.

Additional police staff have been deployed to the streets since 1 July, enhancing visibility and presence in public spaces.

The team has already achieved successes, including the apprehension of two prolific shoplifters, the recovery of stolen property valued at over $1,000, the arrest of an individual attempting to sell stolen goods, and the removal of 12 truant youths from a hazardous derelict building.

A roster of 10 officers will patrol high-demand city areas at various times of the day and night, with plans to increase this number in the coming months.

Superintendent Lane Todd, Christchurch Metro Commander said “Seeing that blue shirt out and about helps people be safe and feel safe. We know that one of the greatest things we can do to improve people’s sense of wellbeing, and their trust and confidence in the police, is to be in places where we’re seen.”

The Beat Teams will be deployed to areas and times of increased demand, such as the central city, large malls, major suburban retail areas, and bus hubs. If incidents require additional support, other available staff and specialist groups will be on hand to assist.

To ensure effective deployment, community engagement is crucial. Superintendent Todd reminded the public to continue reporting crime and anti-social behaviour: “We rely heavily on our community to let us know when and where things are happening, so we know where to put our people. Our deployment model, particularly for the Beat Teams, is heavily influenced by information from the public about areas of demand.”

The Beat Teams will collaborate closely with existing Community Patrols, Christchurch City Council, Business Canterbury, and local retailers. “By working together with existing partners, we can provide the most benefit to local people and organisations who already have a stake in keeping our city safe,” said Superintendent Todd.

Christchurch is progressing towards having a team of 18 officers providing seven-day coverage over the next few months.
