Christchurch Police have arrested a man following a series of fires in Woolston on 10 November, one of which caused extensive damage to a building.

Police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand  responded to the incidents in the early hours of Sunday morning, where four fires were started in rubbish bins.

One fire spread to a nearby building, resulting in significant damage.

A 60-year-old Christchurch man was taken into custody yesterday after CCTV footage and public information helped identify him.

He faces four charges of arson, two of intentional damage, and two additional dishonesty charges unrelated to the fires. He appeared in court on 13 November and is set to reappear on 5 December.

Police thanked members of the public for their assistance, saying the information provided was instrumental in making the arrest.
