Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger said the controversial cycleway on Park Terrace was “not the right thing, but said it was time to move on.

Last month, council staff replaced a vehicle lane on Park Terrace with a cycle lane and installed a bus stop on the road, preventing traffic from moving past it.

Mauger said “the whole thing turned into a bit of a shambles, I must admit, in my view, it’s not the right thing but council decided what to do.

So let’s get on with it. It’s no use crying over spilt milk. Let’s just go forward and see what happens with the survey.”

The temporary cycleway will now go to a community board for further “consultation.

Mauger said “if you watch the live feed yesterday, (at council) it was sort of getting a bit messy with one side and the other.

“I’ve got to look at it from a point of view that let’s move on and see where we get to from here.

“And I I don’t want to be ridiculing staff too much because I’ve done a bit of that and it’s not healthy for me to do that. I’ve got to work with these guys. So just let’s get on with it” Mauger said.
