Police in Wanaka are calling on parents to take responsibility for their teenagers’ welfare after a major disorder broke out at Dinosaur Park late last night.
Around midnight, officers were called to the park where approximately 300 young people had gathered, and multiple fights were reported. Emergency services dealt with at least three serious assaults, including instances where young people were knocked unconscious, as well as several minor assaults.
Acting District Commander Inspector Matt Scoles said it was troubling to see many attendees had access to alcohol.
“We know it’s a time of year where lots of people are out celebrating and having a good time,” Scoles said. “But we need parents to make sure their young people are acting responsibly, knowing where they are and what they are doing.”
Scoles said parents would likely be horrified to learn their teenagers were putting themselves in danger, consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, and engaging in violent altercations.
“It’s extremely dangerous for all involved when we have young people drinking under the legal age and gathering en masse without any supervision.”
He added that many of those involved were from out of town, visiting Wanaka with their families on holiday.
Scoles urged holidaymakers to stay together as a family and ensure safety plans are in place.
“Please, keep track of your kids, and have a plan with them around how everyone is going to stay safe,” he said. “We don’t want to be knocking on your door at 2am telling you something serious has happened involving your teenager.”
