Papanui High School’s para-athletes delivered an exceptional performance at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Championships, claiming multiple national titles and a host of podium finishes.
Their success not only highlighted their individual brilliance but also underscored the strength of the school’s athletic programme and its commitment to inclusivity.
Leading the charge was Cody Lamond, who dominated the Junior category with three National Titles.
Cody clinched gold in the Junior 800m Run (2:42.36), Junior 1500m Run (5:48.72), and Junior 2000m Road Race (8:28.00). He also secured silver in Junior Discus and bronze in Junior Shot Put, demonstrating his versatility across track and field events.
The Senior Para 4x100m Relay Team, comprised of Lee West, Toby Paterson, Cody Lamond, and Clark Slater, added to the medal tally with a stunning victory, clocking 1:05.13 to secure the National Title.
Other Papanui para-athletes also excelled at the Championships:
•Josh Rae earned bronze in Senior Long Jump, 400m Sprint, 800m Run, and 1500m Run, and finished fourth in the 2000m Road Race.
•Lee West claimed silver in Senior Long Jump and 100m Sprint, along with bronze in the 400m Sprint and 2000m Road Race.
•Clark Slater took silver in the Junior 800m Run and bronze in both the 1500m Run and 2000m Road Race.
•Adi Pathak showcased his talent in field events with silver in Junior Shot Put and fourth in Junior Discus, alongside a strong fourth-place finish in the 2000m Road Race.
•Sam Churchill placed fourth in the Senior 800m and 1500m Runs.
•Toby Paterson secured fifth in the Senior 2000m Road Race, while Lachlan Oakes claimed fifth in the Senior 1500m Run.
Principal Robert Gilbert praised the athletes for their outstanding achievements.
“These students are shining examples of resilience, determination, and excellence. Their performances have inspired us all and brought immense pride to the Papanui High School community,” he said.
