Orana Wildlife Park has faced a difficult month, bidding farewell to several animals while also celebrating positive developments among its wildlife.

The park announced the deaths of six animals.

Mischief, a 20-year-old llama, and Effy, a 12-year-old sheep, both familiar favourites in the Farmyard area, passed away due to cancer and age-related health issues, respectively.

Belize, a 35-year-old spider monkey, succumbed to an incurable tumour, while Tama, a 15-year-old lioness, passed away following a brain haemorrhage. Toba, a 7-year-old Tasmanian devil, experienced heart failure, and Boris, a 1½-year-old addax, faced respiratory complications.

“All of these beloved animals were under treatment plans in consultation with our vet,” the park said in a statement, acknowledging the efforts made to manage their health issues.

“Our animals are part of our whānau at Orana, and each death is a very sad occasion for the whole team, but especially the keepers who build up a very special bond with the animals. We ask for your kindness and respect with your comments.”

Despite the challenges, the park shared uplifting news about new life and growth.

Two whio ducklings recently hatched and will be released to the wild once they mature.

The park also celebrated the arrival of its first fertile kiwi egg of the season, currently being incubated by a male kiwi named Manawa.

Adding to the good news, the park’s siamang pair, Basuki and Suka, are keeping busy with their active and delightful baby, Berani, who has become a source of joy for visitors and staff.
