One person is in a moderate condition following a single-vehicle crash in the Mackenzie District.

State Highway 8 is currently closed between Lake Tekapo and Fairlie as emergency services work to clear the road.

A police spokesperson said they were called to the scene at 3.17pm on Fairlie-Tekapo Road, near Lilybank Road and Edwards Stream Bridge.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays. Detours are also in place.

The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.

A St John spokesperson said they responded with two first response units, one ambulance, a rapid response unit and an operations manager.

“One patient has been assessed and is being transported to hospital in a moderate condition,” they said.

Two Fire and Emergency appliances from Fairlie and Lake Tekapo were also in attendance.

The NZ Transport Agency said the road is closed until further notice, and to avoid the area or to delay your journey.
