New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has expressed his condolences following the death of Pope Francis, calling it “a time of great sorrow for all those who have admired Pope Francis’ compassion and humility.”

In a statement issued Monday night, Luxon said the Pope would be remembered for his “unwavering commitment to the vulnerable, to social justice, and to interfaith dialogue.”

“Pope Francis was the first Pope from the Southern Hemisphere. My thoughts are with Roman Catholics and all those who mourn his death,” he said.

Flags on public buildings across New Zealand will be lowered to half-mast on Wednesday and on the day of the Pope’s funeral, as per official protocol.

Formal messages from the Governor-General and the Prime Minister will also be sent to the Holy See and the Catholic Church in New Zealand.

A decision on New Zealand representation at the Pope’s funeral will be made once further details are confirmed.

Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters also offered his condolences.

“On behalf of the Government and people of New Zealand, we extend our deepest condolences to the Holy See and the global Roman Catholic community on the passing of Pope Francis. We join in mourning his loss and honour his enduring legacy of humility and compassion,” Peters said.

ACT Party leader David Seymour said the Pope’s life of service was “an inspiration to over a billion Catholics worldwide.”

“I respect his devotion and purpose. May he rest in peace, and may the world find greater peace with each passing year from his example,” Seymour said.

Labour Leader Chris Hipkins said “very sad to hear of the passing of Pope Francis. Throughout his papacy, he showed deep compassion and an unwavering commitment to social justice, inclusion, and the dignity of every person. His leadership challenged us all to build a fairer and more caring world.”
