The Headwaters Eco Lodge in Glenorchy near Queenstown, has been honoured with dual accolades this month, celebrating its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Founders Paul and Debbi Brainerd are finalists in the Sustainable Business Network’s Transformational Leadership Award, recognised for their approach to sustainable business in New Zealand.
As members of the SBN’s “Next 95” list, they join other innovators driving positive environmental and social impact, with winners to be announced on November 27.
In addition, The Headwaters Eco Lodge recently celebrated being a finalist in the New Zealand Tourism Awards for the KiwiRail Tourism Environment Award, a recognition of their eco-friendly tourism.
Paul and Debbi Brainerd’s journey into sustainability began nearly three decades ago when Paul transitioned from the corporate world to philanthropy, founding the Brainerd Foundation to support communities and non-profits in North America.
After discovering Glenorchy over 20 years ago, they invested in revitalising the town’s campground and general store, transforming it into the now-celebrated Headwaters Eco Lodge and Mrs Woolly’s General Store, which also features a café and art gallery.
The lodge, built with the help of local craftsmen and New Zealand artists, incorporates recycled materials from earthquake-damaged structures and woolsheds, embodying a collaborative approach with the local community and experts in sustainable design.
Opening in 2018, The Headwaters Eco Lodge became the first accommodation in New Zealand to meet the Living Building Challenge (LBC) standards, the highest global benchmark for sustainable design.
The lodge operates with 50% less water than typical facilities of similar size, is energy net-positive with nearly 600 solar photovoltaic panels, and houses The Glenorchy Community Trust, which supports local projects and groups.
“We’re thrilled to be recognised among some of New Zealand’s best and brightest tourism leaders and businesses with these awards nominations,” said Debbi Brainerd, reflecting on the achievements.”
