Work is progressing on a new community centre and changing rooms at Lancaster Park, marking another milestone in the ongoing redevelopment of the historic site.
Located on the park’s northeast corner, the new facilities will provide support for sports clubs and community groups in the southeast of Christchurch, according to John Filsell, Christchurch City Council Head of Community Support and Partnerships.
“They’ll be a welcome addition for sports clubs and community groups, allowing them to fully activate the park for sporting, community, and recreational purposes,” Filsell said.

The community centre is expected to open in October and will feature a multi-use function space capable of hosting around 100 people.
The changing rooms will provide essential facilities for local sports clubs, including toilets, showers, and changing areas.
“The sports grounds are already seeing significant use from local clubs, including cricket, rugby, touch rugby, and football,” Filsell said. “Having changing rooms onsite will make a big difference for these clubs and the teams they host.”
Local clubs, including Lancaster Park Cricket Club and Ōtautahi Rugby Club, have contributed to the planning process, alongside various community groups. Filsell said this collaborative approach had ensured the design of the new facilities would meet the needs of both stakeholders and the wider community.
In recent years, the redevelopment of Lancaster Park has included the restoration and rededication of the heritage Memorial Gates and the planting of over 11,000 native trees, with assistance from many local groups.
Further planting is planned, along with the addition of a playground on the eastern side of the park, just south of the new community centre.
