More hospital night parking is on the way, with a six-month clearway trial near Christchurch Hospital set to begin on Monday 10 March.

The trial will run on Hagley Avenue between St Asaph Street and Riccarton Avenue, with clearway restrictions in place daily from 7.30am to 7.30pm.

During these hours, the lane will operate as a normal traffic lane.

Between 7.30pm and 7.30am, the same lane will be available for 18 free on-street parking spaces.

The trial was requested by Harewood Councillor Aaron Keown and approved by the Finance and Performance Committee in December.

The aim is to assess whether nighttime-only parking is feasible for this section of Hagley Avenue.

Transport Operations Manager Stephen Wright said the trial would help determine the impact of permanently converting the kerbside lane into a free parking area.

“We want to see how this affects traffic flow, congestion, and whether it works for everyone using the road,” Wright said.

The clearway will be marked by signs and road markings, with the ability to end the trial early if required.

“We’ll work closely with St John to ensure their access to the Emergency Department is not affected,” he said.

“Keeping the lane clear during the day will be crucial. We’re asking people to leave the parking spaces before 7.30am each day so the lane can return to normal traffic use.

“If you’re unsure you can move your vehicle before 7.30am, please park elsewhere in the area.”

Public feedback will be sought towards the end of the trial, with input from nearby stakeholders and those who use the free parking.

Once the trial ends, the results will be reviewed and a report will be presented to the elected Council for a final decision.
