Travellers heading out for Labour Weekend have been urged to prepare for changeable weather, with torrential rain expected in some areas.

MetService and meteorologists have warned of two incoming storm surges, starting today and tomorrow over the South Island, according to NZ Transport Agency.

Milford Sound Highway Closed Due to Avalanche Risk

The Milford Sound Highway (SH94) is closed today due to increased avalanche risk caused by heavy rain.

A possible reopening on Friday will depend on avalanche risk and storm clearance work.

Heavy Rain and Flooding Risks on West Coast

Drivers on State Highway 6 (SH6) south of Harihari should prepare for heavy rain and potential flooding from rivers such as the Waiho near Franz Josef today and tomorrow.

Mark Pinner, NZTA Central South Island System Manager, advised motorists to avoid driving at night, maintain double the usual distance from the car in front during heavy rain, and expect possible road closures due to fallen trees or slips.

Alpine Passes Brace for Storm

Heavy rainfall is set to move into alpine areas on SH73, the Arthur’s Pass/Otira highway, and further north on the West Coast late Thursday into Friday. Rain is expected to ease south of Arthur’s Pass by early Friday, with other areas following later in the day. Canterbury river catchments, including the Rakaia and Rangitata, are also forecast to receive significant rainfall in the headwaters.

Second Storm Expected Over Weekend

A second storm is forecast to affect the upper half of the South Island on Saturday, bringing heavy rain to areas including Kaikōura, Nelson, Marlborough, Buller, and the eastern foothills. Cold air is also expected along the Main Divide, potentially requiring chains for vehicles on alpine passes such as Porters and Arthur’s Pass.

With heavy traffic expected over the long weekend, NZTA advised avoiding peak travel times to make journeys smoother. Travellers should keep up to date on road conditions, carry snacks, water, blankets, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition, including functioning windscreen wipers.

For weather warnings and road conditions, check MetService and NZTA’s highway conditions.
