The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is advising New Zealanders in Israel and Iran to shelter in place and follow local authority instructions as military airstrikes continue in both countries.

In an advisory issued through SafeTravel, MFAT warned that communications, flights, and general transportation are likely to be disrupted, and people may struggle to contact family and friends during the strikes.

“While strikes are under way, New Zealanders in the affected areas should shelter in a safe place and follow appropriate advice from local authorities,” the advisory said.

“It is likely that communications will be disrupted for a period of time, which will make it difficult for you to make contact with your family and friends to let them know you are safe. You should keep trying as lines become clear.”

MFAT also warned that it may not be safe to travel within the region for some time and advised New Zealanders to speak with airlines or travel agents once the situation stabilises.

“Once it is safe to, you should consider making plans to leave,” the advisory said.

The Ministry has also reminded travellers across the wider Middle East to stay informed, monitor local media, and check SafeTravel for up-to-date security information.

“If you have concerns for your safety, or you’re unsure about your intended travel plans, consider making alternative arrangements,” the Ministry said.

MFAT is also urging New Zealanders overseas to take out comprehensive travel insurance and to register their details on SafeTravel to receive real-time updates.

The Ministry noted that demonstrations and unrest linked to the situation are occurring globally, and warned that protest activity may be subject to strict legal controls depending on the country.

“New Zealanders also need to respect the laws of the country they are in. The reality is that some governments place more rules around protest activity than New Zealand,” the advisory said.
