Heavy rain for the West Coast and northwest gales for Canterbury High Country
An active front, accompanied by strong northwesterlies, is moving up the South Island late Friday and into Saturday, bringing heavy rain to western regions and high winds to the Canterbury High Country.
Heavy Rain Warning – Orange
Area: Canterbury High Country lakes and headwaters, south of the Rangitata River
Period: 3:00am – 3:00pm, Saturday 14 December
Forecast:
•150-200mm of rain near the main divide.
•80-100mm within 15km east of the divide.
•Peak rain rates of 25-35mm/hour near the divide.
•Freezing level around 3000m.
•Minimal chance of an upgrade to a Red Warning.
Impact:
•Rapid rises in streams and rivers.
•Surface flooding, slips, and challenging driving conditions possible.
Action:
•Clear drains and gutters.
•Avoid low-lying areas.
•Drive cautiously.
