A 32-year-old man is facing eight charges, including murder and attempted murder, following the incident in Nelson that claimed the life of Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming and left several others injured.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, will also face charges of:

•Two counts of assault using a vehicle as a weapon.

•Two counts of wounding with intent (reckless disregard), involving another injured officer and a member of the public.

•Dangerous driving.

•Driving while disqualified.

Police Commissioner Richard Chambers said more charges may follow as investigations continue.

The accused is set to appear in Nelson District Court tomorrow, Friday 3 December.

Senior Sergeant Fleming’s death marks a tragic milestone as the first policewoman in New Zealand to be killed in the line of duty.

She is also the first police officer to die in service in Nelson.

Commissioner Chambers described the events as “tragic and senseless” and said the loss has sent shockwaves through the Police force and the community.

“This was a heartbreaking incident, and we are all struggling to understand why this has happened,” he said.

Fleming was a highly respected officer with years of dedicated service. She was known for her commitment to her colleagues and her community, making her death a significant blow to the region.

Police have confirmed that the accused allegedly used a vehicle as a weapon during the incident, leading to serious injuries for another officer and a member of the public.

Both individuals are recovering, with support being provided by Police.

Chambers praised the investigation team for their tireless work, saying they have been working around the clock to piece together the events and gather evidence.

Witnesses are still being interviewed as the case develops.

Fleming’s family has requested privacy as they grieve this profound loss.

In a statement, they thanked the staff at Nelson Hospital, members of the public who stepped in to help the injured officers, and others affected by the incident.

The Nelson community has expressed its sorrow, with flowers and messages pouring in for Fleming and her family.

The Police force has also received condolences from across New Zealand and international law enforcement agencies.

“This is an incredibly difficult time for Lyn’s family, her colleagues, and the wider Nelson community,” Chambers said.

Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the area who witnessed the incident or any events leading up to it.

They will be conducting area enquiries which will include visiting business in the area canvassing for CCTV footage.

If any businesses think they may have relevant CCTV, they should contact Nelson Police.
