A Christchurch man has been charged with murder after a woman was found deceased at a Mt Pleasant address on Monday evening, police confirmed.
Detective Inspector Joel Syme said that emergency services were called to the Mt Pleasant property around 5pm on 7 October, prompting a homicide investigation.
“Police are now working to establish exactly what has occurred; however, we can confirm that we are not seeking anyone else in relation to this matter,” Syme said.
The man was located and arrested last night, and he is expected to appear this morning in the Christchurch District Court facing a murder charge.
The investigation is still in its early stages, and police are looking into the movements of both the victim and the person charged in the days leading up to the woman’s death. Authorities are particularly interested in any suspicious activity between 10am on Friday 4 October and 4pm on Sunday 6 October in the Mt Pleasant Road or Bellview Avenue area.
Forensic teams from Police and ESR are examining the woman’s address, with work expected to continue over the coming days. A post-mortem is yet to be conducted, and next-of-kin notifications are underway.
“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family at this extremely difficult time,” Syme said. “Police, along with Victim Support, will be working with the family to ensure they are supported.”
Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact police online or call 105, quoting reference number 241007/1228.
