A major infrastructure project is underway in the city’s north-west to improve traffic flow and accessibility at a busy intersection and railway level crossings.

Traffic lights are being installed at the intersection of Greers and Langdons Roads, while upgrades to the railway crossings on Harewood and Langdons Roads are set to begin.

Jacob Bradbury, Planning and Delivery Transport Manager, acknowledged the disruptions expected in the Papanui and Bishopdale areas until mid-December.

“We’re staging the works and coordinating traffic management across the projects to minimise the impact.”

The Council, in collaboration with KiwiRail, is implementing critical renewal works, including signalised pedestrian crossings and track replacements.

Bradbury noted the improvements’ long-term benefits, saying, “These works will ensure the long-term resilience of the railway crossing.”

The Harewood Road railway crossing will be closed for three weeks from Saturday 7 September. In October there will be a mixture of day/night and night closures at the Langdons Road crossing, and both crossings will have periods of stop/go traffic management.

Bradbury highlighted the necessity of traffic lights due to increased traffic, saying, “There are now almost 30,000 people travelling through here each day.”

Residents and businesses are urged to remain patient during the construction period.

A crossing upgrade on Sawyers Arms Road is planned for early 2025, with new pedestrian crossings to be commissioned after all railway upgrades are complete.
