A brilliant display of the Aurora Australis, also known as the Southern Lights, lit up the skies over parts of New Zealand last night, captivating residents and photographers alike.

The rare natural light show, which painted the night with hues of green, pink, and purple, was visible in the southern regions of the country.

The Aurora Australis occurs when charged solar particles interact with Earth’s magnetic field, creating a breathtaking dance of lights.

It is typically best viewed from high-latitude regions like Antarctica and the southern tips of New Zealand and Australia, but clear skies and recent solar activity made this spectacle visible further north than usual.
