Fire and Emergency crews are battling a large vegetation fire at Bridge Hill, SH73 near Craigieburn, which has already burned through approximately 140 hectares and continues to spread. The fire has jumped State Highway 73 and remains uncontained, with efforts to control it hampered by high winds and extreme fire behaviour.
Incident Commander Brian Keown said three schools have been evacuated from camps in the area as a precaution. Two of the groups were staying at the Environmental Education Centre, while the third was at Forest Lodge.
“All students are safe and well away from the fire,” Keown said.
The firefighting operation includes eight helicopters, with a ninth on the way, and 11 trucks, tankers, and support vehicles. Crews are working tirelessly to bring the fire under control.
Keown said SH73 is closed and is expected to remain shut for some time.
“People should avoid the area and look to make alternative travel arrangements if they were planning to use this road today,” he said.
